What Postinor 2 does to your cycle (that the label doesn't say)
The actual side effects of Postinor 2, what's normal vs what needs attention, and how emergency contraception works in Nigeria.
A faint second line on a Postinor 2 test is still a positive. A late period after taking it is usually not. Knowing which side effects are expected, and which ones need attention, is what this article covers.
What Postinor 2 is and how it works
Postinor 2 contains levonorgestrel 0.75mg. A synthetic progestogen. It works primarily by delaying or inhibiting ovulation. It does not terminate an established pregnancy.
It is available over the counter in Nigeria without a prescription. Effectiveness is time-dependent: ~95% within 24 hours, ~85% within 24–48 hours, ~58% within 48–72 hours. After 72 hours, it is not recommended.
Common side effects (expected and temporary)
These are normal and typically resolve within 1–3 days:
- Nausea: most common; affects about 20–30% of users. Taking with food reduces this.
- Headache
- Dizziness
- Breast tenderness
- Fatigue
- Abdominal pain or cramping
None of these require stopping the medication or seeking medical attention.
Effect on your next period. The most common question
Postinor 2 frequently changes your next menstrual cycle. This is expected, not a sign of failure:
- Early period: your next period may come 3–7 days earlier than expected
- Late period: it may come up to a week later than expected
- Heavier or lighter flow: both are possible
- Spotting: light bleeding within a few days of taking Postinor 2 is common
If your period is more than 1 week late: Take a pregnancy test. Postinor 2 is not 100% effective.
Side effects that warrant medical attention
These are not typical and should be evaluated:
- Severe abdominal pain (especially one-sided). Could indicate ectopic pregnancy if you are pregnant
- Heavy vaginal bleeding that soaks more than one pad per hour
- Severe vomiting within 2 hours of taking the pill. The dose may not have been absorbed; contact a pharmacist about re-dosing
Frequently asked questions
Can I take Postinor 2 more than once in a cycle? It is not recommended as a regular contraceptive method. Repeated use in one cycle increases side effects and is less effective than regular contraception.
Does Postinor 2 protect against STIs? No. It only reduces pregnancy risk.
Can it affect future fertility? No evidence that occasional use affects long-term fertility.
Postinor 2 and other emergency contraception options are available through Famasi with delivery across Nigeria. See all emergency contraception options.
The most important thing to know: side effects are expected and temporary. What's not expected, severe one-sided pain or very heavy bleeding, is the signal to seek care immediately.
